This weekend’s 3rd annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic on Governor’s Island played host to a cadre of international players with a roster that included bold names such as Prince Harry of Wales and Argentine model and polo player, Nachos Figueras. The dapper, and equally bold-named, crowd turned out in droves to catch the action of the ‘Sport of Kings’ and support the Prince’s charity ‘American Friends of Sentebale,’ which aids impoverished children in South Africa….

With summer now in full force, so is the style stalking of fashionable folks attending Glastonbury Music Festival in Somerset, England, which is not only famous for the artists who play there, but also for the stylish Brits like Sienna Miller and Kate Moss who have made sartorial declarations at the fest’ that have subsequently been copied worldwide — think wellies with cut-off denim short-shorts, baggy army jackets, second-skin latex pants, and barely there dresses with low-slung belts.
Now joining the “It” girls of Glastonbury is “Harry Potter” star/Burberry face Emma Watson, who accompanied her musician boyfriend to the festival this weekend wearing a camouflage corset by Burberry, cuffed dark-denim shorts (at a relatively conservative length), black knee-high socks, and matching riding boots.
The 20-year-old actress, who also donned a corset on the cover of British Elle last year, accessorized with a messy braided ponytail, tortoiseshell sunglasses, and a festival-going classic: the fringed leather bag.

There are models and then there are supermodels. Nashville-residing, British-born, red-headed beauty Karen Elson falls in the latter category.
Her couture experiences were the focus of the interview I conducted with her last week at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Nashville museum that is currently home to “The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947-1957,” a landmark fashion exhibit originated at London’s Victoria & Albert in 2007.
When it comes to fashion history, Elson knows her stuff and is as handy with references to post-WWII era photography and the legacy of legendary European designers of the past as she is the with the new kids on modern fashion’s front lines.
Our talk – billed as “Modeling Couture: A conversation with supermodel Karen Elson and fashion journalist Libby Callaway” – was supposed to be an hour long; 80 minutes after start time, K.E. was still sharing stories, mesmerizing us with her candid, fact-filled accounts of her life in fashion.
And it’s not just her modeling prowess that has garnered her attention as of late. Elson co-owns the famed vintage haven Venus & Mars: The Showroom with partner Amy Patterson, and is also currently touring to support her first album, The Ghost Who Walks. Already a hit among indie circles, it was produced by her husband Jack White for his Nashville-based label, Third Man Records.

The curvy pop personality’s collection of jeanswear is poised to hit the floors of about 1,000 stores in mid-July, but StyleList got a sneak peek. And the silhouettes are super-slim with no “mom jeans” in sight.
“I am so excited for the launch so that everyone can experience the magic of my denim,” Simpson told StyleList.
“It is comfortable, affordable, trend-right, and you will look hot, guaranteed! I am already wearing them and loving them; I know you will too!”
The core collection is available in four silhouettes – Vintage Flare, Forever Skinny, Forever Skinny Distressed, and Sunset Bootleg.
In addition, there are four fashion styles – the Kiss Me jegging, the Splendor eyelet ankle, the Ingénue zipped ankle skinny, and the Malibu, which is gray, low-rise, and skinny. It does not, however, include a roomier boyfriend fit or fuller-figure pair.
Instead, Simpson recommends that girls with hips choose the slimming bootleg cut, like she did and paired with ultra-high wooden platform clogs, which makes the star look like a cool, tall drink of water (see above).
The jeans collection also includes complementary pieces — jackets, vests, woven shirts, tanks, short skirts, and even a cropped jumpsuit that we could definitely see Simpson wearing.
The pieces are very well-priced, with nothing even approaching $100 except the jumpsuit, which is $120.

Ladies, it’s time to hike up those skirts.
According to research from American academic John L. Casti, short skirts can be a predictor of a nation’s economic and political prosperity, the Daily Express reports.
Wow. Between this and eBay’s “miniskirt meteorology,” these skirts might want to quit their day jobs and form a psychic network.
In his new book “Mood Matters: From Rising Skirt Lengths to the Collapse of World Powers,” Casti reportedly claims that social features — including rising hemlines and happy, upbeat songs on the radio — can signal a nation’s overall optimism as well as trigger positive outcomes in the financial and political arenas.
“All social events ranging from trends in pop music and art to the outcome of elections and even the rise and fall of great civilizations are biased by the attitudes a society holds to the future,” the author says.
“When the ’social mood’ is positive, events of an entirely different character tend to occur than when society is pessimistic.
“Most people think the outcome of elections causes the mood of the country to change. The opposite is true.”
So what’s the Romans’ excuse? Those dudes wore some pretty short skirts and it didn’t do them much good in the end. Just sayin.’
Ah, screw it. If it will help the economy, toss us a mini and crank up the Bobby McFerrin.
