When I mention cosmetics, I’m not just talking about make-up, I am talking about shampoos and soaps, also.
As harsh as it may seem, I am a vegetarian, but I don’t disapprove of animal testing for medical purpose, but animal testing for cosmetic products should be banned because cosmetic products aren’t as necessary as medicine.
So besides pain and suffering of the animal and the fact that animal testing is inaccurate (because there are things that work on animals but no on humans), what are other good reasons animal testing on cosmetic products should be banned?
Here is an old answer of mine that dispels the propogated myth that animal testing has every yielded strong results for man (only in genetics fruit flies has this proven to be of some aid, however the bulk of genetical testing comes from human study & plant study)
I myself even as a vegetarian was for animal testing and thought it necessary, like many answers here i assumed it a necessary prerequisite in working up the scale to finding new drugs for humans & making sure they were safe before they got to us. Couldn’t be any more of a lie, 80% have been recalled that originated from animal testing. The animal testing was in no way the most beneficial part of any drugs that were founded, the crucial evidence always came from the study and observation in human interaction with the compounds. Thylaminode (can never spell that right) came about from animal testing & caused many many defects in new children, conversely penicillin was discovered through human testing & had it of been used in rodents as commonly practiced it would’ve been ignored as it produces no results. Penicillin is the near equivilant to water, its the basis for most medicines. Cancer & such was discovered through human testing (nazis, ethical dillema). In fact its hard to point to many cases where we used animals and BINGO struck gold from the data obtained from them.
Ethics aside, its just plain thick. You’re dosing a completely different animal often not even of the same subspecies who evolved differently, & trying to extrapolate those results to humans. Only time that would come in handy is of blatantly toxin materials to many mammals like radioactive/arsenics etc & that is just a rule of thumb. As for the Cosmetics industry, there is no justification for animal use
"Like every one else in my profession, I used to be of the opinion that we owe nearly all our knowledge of medical and surgical science to animal experiments. Today I know that precisely the opposite is the case. In surgery especially, they are of no help to the practitioner, indeed he is often led astray by them." –Professor Bigelow

As for why its bad to test on an animal, they cannot agree simple as. If we are to accept that intelligence is the differentiating factor that allows us to subject them to radiation to develop cancer etc(ie we are the better species due to our intelligence) then this also means those below a certain criteria of intelligence should be subject to testing namely mentally disabled & young babies (many adult animals are smarter than both)……obviously this is wrong.
Vivisection & animal testing has no moral ground to stand on, it is a simple practice of might is right that subjects those weaker to horrible experiments. It is uncannily like the reasoning used by nazis to test on ”lower humans” like gypsies & jews
